"Cool Careers for Technical Communicators"
Santa in sunglasses

by Several Presenters

Program Description

Looking for a job? Thinking about a career change? Dreading it? Our January program promises not only to help you find jobs you never knew existed, but to make it fun! In a table progression, you’ll get to meet and learn from STC-ers who have already transitioned into these cool careers.

These presenters will offer their well-studied insights, and audience members can ask questions and offer their own insights. Be there to take full advantage of our shared knowledge!

About our Presenters

Nan Breedlove, Grant Writer

Organize, organize, organize—this simple mantra will take you far in tech writing and in grant writing as well. Nan found that the shift from the technical to the nonprofit world was yet another adventure in writing, her first love. Along the way she has also worked as a journalist and edited newsletters.

Judith Herr, Instructional Designer and Trainer

To her work as a technical communicator, Judy brings 20+ years experience gained from positions as varied as communication/documentation director for a large consulting firm, director of training for a health care system, director of development for a non-profit organization, college instructor, media specialist for the U.S. Public Health Service, and proposal manager.

When called for, she applies her professional expertise and personal experience living abroad to global communication challenges. (She lived for three years in Belgium and three in Malaysia). For example, Judy recently designed and implemented materials and curriculum for training of 6,000 the personnel and vendors worldwide of a garment manufacturer. The project involved interviewing managers globally; interfacing with scientists and SMEs in the United States, Europe, and Asia; targeting different training materials for each audience; and arranging for translation.

For the progression, participants will match the extensive list of capabilities technical communicators bring along to the list of skills required to develop and deliver training - an “Encouraging Exercise.” And, we’ll explore some resources available to those interested in working in training and performance improvement.

Beau Cain, Region 8 Director Sponsor

Beau has used his knowledge of the similarities and differences between technical communication and marketing communication to help him manage projects to successful completion. His college course, "Writing White Papers", spawned a successful one-hour presentation, "White Papers In Your Future", that shows tech writers how to insinuate their skills into the product development and sales process.
