"Stalking
the Wild SME Bird"
By Melody
Brumis and Gwaltney Mountford

Program
Description
SME birds (subject matter experts) are our major source of
information. Most often found in the guise of engineers, they
can be elusive, overworked, uncommunicative, or down right
difficult. And we can feel shattered and confused after even
a brief encounter. In this interactive session, Melody Brumis
and Gwaltney Mountford will show you how to not only survive
your interactions with SME birds, but successfully get what
you need, when you need it.

About our Presenters
|
Melody Brumis has been studying wild (and elusive)
SME birds as a technical communicator for the past 20
years. Her specialty is in gathering information from
the highly technical (all-knowing) SME bird. Melody
is on contract with Chevron writing server documents
and maintaining a documentation Web site.
An active member of this chapter, Melody has been newsletter
editor, president, and was a recipient of the Distinguished
Chapter Service Award. She has presented SME birds at
local STC chapters and other topics at regional and
international conferences.

Gwaltney Mountford has been successfully capturing
information from SME birds of many varieties for the
past 25 years. With her (all-knowing) SME bird husband,
she owns Mountford Group, Inc. Her experience covers
a range of industries and technical communication projects,
from end-user documentation to product development support.
An STC Associate Fellow, she is active at all levels
of the Society. She was chapter president, ran the Region
8 conference, ran the Technical Publication Competition
for the Bay Area, and served on the Society Nominating
Committee. She is a frequent presenter at local chapters
and at regional and international conferences.
